Basic Tools (Vernier Caliper, Micrometer, Height Gauge)

1. Vernier Caliper

  • Versatile tool for measuring external, internal, and depth dimensions
  • Typical accuracy: ±0.02 mm
  • Commonly used for quick inspection on the shop floor

2. Micrometer (Screw Gauge)

  • Provides higher precision than a caliper
  • Used for measuring thickness, diameter, and small dimensions
  • Typical accuracy: ±0.001 mm
  • Types include outside, inside, and depth micrometers

3. Height Gauge

  • Used on a surface plate to measure vertical dimensions
  • Often used for marking out or inspecting part features
  • Can be combined with dial indicators for higher accuracy

These tools are widely used due to their simplicity, portability, and cost-effectiveness.

Advanced Instruments (CMM, Laser Scanners)

1. Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)

  • Highly precise system that measures the geometry of a part using a probe
  • Can capture 3D coordinates of complex shapes
  • Used for inspection of tight tolerances and GD&T features
  • Often integrated with software for automated analysis

2. Laser Scanners

  • Use laser beams to capture the surface geometry of objects
  • Generate point clouds or 3D models
  • Ideal for complex shapes, freeform surfaces, and reverse engineering
  • Fast and capable of measuring without physical contact

These advanced instruments are critical in modern manufacturing, especially for high-precision and complex components
